Slack offboarding checklist

Workspace owners and admins can deactivate a member in Slack’s admin settings. Deactivated members can’t sign in, and their messages stay in place.

Track it in Handover

Remove access

  • Deactivate their account from the member management page.
  • If they were a workspace owner or admin, give that role to someone else first.
  • Remove them from Slack Connect channels shared with other companies.

Tidy up

  • Reassign channels they managed and workflows or apps they installed.
  • Check apps and bots tied to their account; some stop working when the installer is deactivated.
  • Record what you did and when.

Questions

Do I lose their messages if I deactivate them?

No. Deactivating keeps their messages and files in the workspace; it only stops them signing in.
